

It was the first Quake game with a congruent storyline and level design. Quake 2 was the definitive single player Quake game. Quake and the Strogg and that storyline didn't manifest until Quake 2 came along. Due to the amount of time spent doing this they needed to ship something so they implemented the idea of Slipgates to tie the levels together.I mean the story is literally like 4 sentences long and is contained in a notepad text file on the disc lmao.

You basically had two groups of people working on two very different games. This is why in some levels you have industrial military complex's and in other levels you have medieval Lovecraftian inspired monsters. and others on the team wanted a more futuristic sci-fi fps with a strong deathmatch presence. He also wanted it to a a massive multiplayer game. wanted a more medieval first person action RPG. Quake has a lot of problems in its initial development.
